Is Ombar suitable for my dietary requirements?

All of our chocolates are 100% vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free, and free of refined sugar. Our products may contain nuts. Ombar chocolates are not currently certified kosher.

Is Ombar chocolate organic?

Absolutely. All our products are organic and certified by the Organic Food Federation.

What makes Ombar chocolate healthy?

We’ve unpacked the ingredients of conventional chocolate, thrown out the bad stuff, and put it back together again to make a healthier, tastier chocolate bar. All of our chocolates are:

  • Made with raw cacao. We keep the cacao raw to retain its natural superfood goodness. To find out more about cacao, visit our blogs: 'Cacao Versus Cocoa', and ‘Cacao: the mineral marvel’.
  • Refined sugar-free. We make our chocolate from coconut sugar. Unlike cane sugar, it’s unrefined, whole and mineral-rich.
  • Dairy-free. Because we believe a plant-based diet is better for our bodies and the planet.
  • All-natural. We pack our bars with whole fruits and powders, like blueberries, acais and gojis.
  • Free of additives and preservatives.
What are the live cultures in our chocolate?

We add vegan live cultures (Lactobacillus acidophilus) to some of our flavours for an extra, gut-friendly health boost.

What is the shelf life of Ombar chocolate?

Not that we think you’ll be able to resist for this long, but one year. Our chocolate is still safe to eat after the expiry date, it just won’t taste quite as nice.

Is Ombar packaging eco-friendly?

Like you, we believe in recycling. So we wrap our bars in recyclable paper, and ship them in fully-recyclable cardboard. Did you know our buttons bags are fully compostable? Just throw them in your compost bin with vegetable peelings - within a few weeks the bag will have completely broken down and returned to nature.

How can I use Ombar in recipes?

Because cooking raw cacao at high temperatures can damage its natural goodness, we believe Ombar is best enjoyed as a healthy snack alternative. However, we can’t deny our chocolate is super tasty when stirred into porridge, scooped up with almond butter, or gently melted and drizzled over fruit and cakes. You can find some of our favourite recipes here.

What is the difference between raw chocolate and conventional chocolate?

Our chocolate is made with raw cacao, so unlike conventional chocolate, it’s never heated to the high temperatures that can be detrimental to its potential health benefits. By leaving the beans out to dry in the open air (rather than roasting them) and then processing the cacao at a low heat, our decadent chocolate delivers a lot more of the good stuff. You can find out more here.

What is a flavanol?

A flavanol is a type of flavonoid found in cacao. Flavonoids are antioxidant compounds which are believed to protect against cell damage. Research shows that the flavanols in cacao can help to lower blood pressure, promote normal blood clotting function and - as part of a healthy diet and exercise routine - help to decrease the risk of heart disease. Our raw chocolate contains six times more flavanols than conventional chocolate. Find out more about flavanols here.

Where are Ombar ingredients sourced?

Ombar ingredients are natural, organic and minimally processed to deliver as much goodness as possible. We source our ingredients from the following regions:

  • Premium raw cacao from sustainable smallholdings in Ecuador.
  • Coconut sugar and creamed coconut from the Philippines.
  • Vanilla from Madagascar.
  • Whole fruits from Europe.
Is Ombar fair trade?

Yes, we are certified by the Fair for Life accreditation. We’re proud to work closely with our suppliers to ensure everyone, from farmers to exporters, are compensated fairly. Find out more about our Fair for Life efforts here.

How many Ombars are made in one day?

About 23,000!

Why is Ombar more expensive than other, conventional chocolates?

As the producers of the best-selling raw chocolate in the UK we only use premium, ethically-sourced ingredients, which means our chocolate costs a little more to manufacture. Because we always want to do the best for our customers, we’re constantly looking out for ways to decrease the cost to you without compromising on quality.
